In 1972 The pressing need for an arena to serve the South Colchester area spurred local organizer Don Henderson to spearhead various dynamic fundraising efforts to make present Sportsplex a reality.
South Colchester Sportsplex was officially opened March 3rd, 1975
The Sportsplex was equipped with full-sized skating rink, four-sheet Curling rink, Restaurant and Senior Citizens' meeting room.
Construction required co-operation, hard work and financial support. To maintain bldg took same effort.
Without long-term assistance, the Sportsplex had no hope of survival. Where would assistance come from?
Answer came in form of the Brookfield Lotta-Truck Draw. A Raffle / lottery where major vehicle prizes would be awarded.
The 1st Lotta-Truck Festival was held in October 1987 in a "draw down" format with last number determining winner of the Grand prize; an '87 Freightliner Truck. In subsequent yrs this format replaced by straight "luck of the draw".
Second draw in 1988 included a Show followed by a dance for entrants. Over the years Show has hosted names such as Barra Macneils, Terry Kelly, Charlie Major, Joan Kennedy and Bruce Guthro.
Brookfield Lotta-Truck Festival was conceived as the main financial support for the Sportsplex. To this end, the Festival also allows us to sponsor two Provincial Curling Championships plus local Hockey and softball teams.
We strive to provide unique prizes in addition to Entertainment. Over the years we have awarded: a Kent Home, 40" TVs, various 1/2 ton trucks, Mustangs, VW Beetles, Winnebagos, Jeep Cherokees and Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
